Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist, artist, and brain hemorrhage survivor with unique and unparalleled insight into how the brain works – or doesn’t. Taylor, a Harvard-trained brain scientist was a front-row witness to the inner-workings of her own brain after a 1986 brain hemorrhage left her unable to walk, talk, read, write, or even remember.
Dr. Taylor lost the categorizing, organizing, describing, judging and analyzing skills of her left brain, along with its language centers and ego center. Also, in the absence of her left-brain’s neural circuitry, her consciousness shifted into present moment thinking whereby she experienced herself “at one with the universe.” In response to the swelling and trauma of her stroke which placed pressure on her dominant left hemisphere, the functions of Jill’s right hemisphere flourished. Since her brain hemorrhage, Dr. Taylor has slowly rewired her brain from right to left and she since completely recovered. She has also embraced her artistic side and creates and sells unique stained glass brains. Her memoir of these mysteries, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey, charts new territory in just how different our two sides function.
