The Astonishing Tribe, a company known for it’s wild and out there interfaces for cell phones, is back at it again. This time however, they have not completely sacrificed practicality and functionality for the sake of looking cool. In the past they have created other interfaces or features that leave the user thinking, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool’, but really do very little to help the user to navigate the features within the device in an efficient manner. For instance, their ‘fold out’ cell phone interface is visually quite pleasing, and has an inviting aesthetic, however, the functionality is slow, and the whole concept is quite inefficient.

Click to View A Video of the Interface in Action

That is not to say that the concept user interface is a failure though, because I don’t think this particular UI was ever intended to reach a mass audience. In essence, it boils down to a technology demo of what is possible if one begins to think differently than its predecessors’, and in that respect, it succeeds admirably. In a similar manner, their eye tracking User Interface represents another technology demo. It is a small feature, a small piece of a much larger puzzle, but when the company can begin to pull all the pieces of the puzzle together, then they will be moving closer towards the end goal: a highly efficient, visually pleasing user interface that is easily recognizable among a sea of competitors.

What TAT has begun to do, is try to put a few of the pieces together to create a more coherent interface. The end result is actually a fairly functional semi-three dimensional interface that functions in a mostly two dimensional manner. What makes it so interesting and novel, is the manner in which it utilizes the 3D space to allow for functionality, instead of using it just for the sake of being able to, while still utilizing the 2D space to maximize the intuitiveness as a whole.

Click to Open Up A Youtube Video of the Interface in Action

Now obviously, there is much to be improved upon still, and the interface is far from final. Objects on screen still take up far too much space, which minimizes the total amount of information / options that can be pursued from a single screen, which decreases efficiency, there is perhaps a bit too much white space in general, and the aesthetic could be refined still. However this is an early concept, and once again, will likely be used mostly to scavenge for working parts, like an old car, to be placed into a newer, more efficient User Interface. Still, it is undeniable that even a concept like this can evoke excitement for users, as it could potentially open up the doors for different interfaces that improve and refine upon the initial groundwork being laid.
